Project Context

Longyuan Mulilo De Aar 2 North Wind Energy Facility, located in the Northern Cape Province, supplies wind-generated electricity to the South African grid – which is currently dominated by coal power plants (responsible for greenhouse gas (GHG) and other toxic pollution). The project installs a new grid-connected wind farm consisting of 96 wind turbines with a capacity of 144MW. The total GHG emission reductions after the crediting period are expected to be 4,339,290 tCO2e and annual average GHG emission reductions are 433,929 tCO2e. Find out more here.

Benefits & Impact

  • Development: Promotion and development of wind power technology in the RSA.
  • Electricity: Contribution to achievement of the national goal to generate 10,000 GWh of electricity from renewable energy by 2013.
  • Reduction: Contribution to reduce RSA’s GHG emissions by approximately 34% below the current emissions baseline by 2020.
  • Sanitation: Provided at least 941 kl of portable water per day to 6,502 people by improved wells.
  • Education: Ensure that all youth and a substantial proportion of adults, both men and women, achieve literacy and numeracy
  • Implementation: Project implementation led to the creation of 8,987 person-months during the construction phase and 14,076 person-months during the operation phase.
  • Investment: Sales of carbon credits generated by the project will result in increased foreign direct investment
  • Emissions: Reduced combustion of fossil fuels (mostly coal) at Eskom’s power plants and thereby emissions of GHG and other pollutants

Benefits contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality and spur economic growth - all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
